95 percent of all jobs are “hidden jobs” —Wall Street Journal

Great News!

David Perry, a longtime headhunter and author, says the bottom line in today’s economy: You have to tap into the vast “hidden job market.”

According to a joint study conducted by the Society for Human Resource Management and the Wall Street Journal’s CareerJournal.com, nearly 95 percent of all the jobs that pay a salary and offer benefits are never advertised.

The Society for Human Resource Management also took a nationwide poll of their membership (HR executives).

The poll result showed that:

1. Less than 50 percent of a company’s available job openings are posted on their own career websites. When a company says, “We have a hiring freeze,” that doesn’t mean they’re not hiring—t just means they’re not adding headcount now, and that is not entirely true.
2. Every year, there is a 20 percent to 25 percent turnover in most companies. So, in a 1,000-person company, 200 or 250 people are going to turn over, either through attrition, someone moves, someone is promoted or, as the economy gets better, they leave, etc. These companies are still hiring.
3. But HR does not want to tell you this fact. That is why you must seek the highest (CEO or EVP) hiring manager within that same company. The hiring manager’s response would probably be the opposite of HR because they are always open to new and better talent. They may not have an opening the minute you call, but impress them, and now you will have given them the excuse they need to make room or sponsor you! That is what we teach, with a twist!
